The Kool brand was created in 1933 by the American company Brown and Williamson Tobacco. Kool cigarettes were the world’s first menthol cigarettes and the most popular menthol cigarettes in the U.S. (until the 2000s). The first version of cigarettes was without a filter and the standard format for that time – 70 mm. The king size format (85 mm) cigarettes received in 1953, but were still without a filter. The Kool cigarettes filter was equipped in 1956, and already in 1962 a line was introduced without a filter due to the rather large popularity of the filterless Kool. A 100 mm version with a filter appeared in 1967.
In the 1970s, Kool, like most other brands, underwent significant changes: in 1972, Kool Milds appeared (in 85 mm and 100 mm formats); at the same time Kool Super Lights (in 1981 they were replaced by Kool Ultra); in 1979 – Kool International, which, however, was produced for a very short time; in 1981, Kool Lights was introduced.
In the 1940s, on the packs of Kool cigarettes, the mascot of the brand appeared – the Willy penguin. At first, it was printed along with the advertising slogan on the back of the pack. Willie was animated in a series of promotional, black-and-white television cartoons of the 1950s.
