Camel cigarettes first appeared on the shelves of tobacco shops in 1913. It was then that the American company RJR, which specialized in the production of tobacco and accessories for smoking pipes, decided to change its direction and began to manufacture cigarettes, which were only gaining popularity among smokers of that time.
The company quickly gained popularity among smokers, helped by successful advertising campaigns and the excellent quality of raw materials. Unlike competitors, RJR used the original smoking blend, which consisted of tart dark Turkish tobacco and light varieties of Virginia and Burley. Due to successful proportions, Camel cigarettes differed significantly from competitors’ products: despite the mild taste and restrained aroma, the tobacco mixture was full of spicy notes of oriental spices.
Camel has always paid special attention to quality control in production. The density of paper, the burning time of cigarettes, the efficiency of the carbon filter and, of course, the quality of the tobacco mixture have always been at their best, which brought the brand to the top five in terms of sales. In the second half of the 20th century, the company’s only competitor was the equally famous Marlboro brand, with which it shared the laurels of superiority in the tobacco industry. The permanent symbol of Camel has always been Joe the camel – a cartoon character who invariably adorns the packs of cigarettes of the manufacturing company in various guises. Even today, Camel cigarettes are easily recognizable by their well-remembered composition of pyramids and a two-humped animal.
What are Camel cigarettes?

To this day, market research chronologists say that the tobacco industry is divided into two stages – before Camel and after Camel. According to the scientists themselves, these are absolutely two different stages of the tobacco industry. The first production and the first quality Camel cigarettes appeared in 1913. This year, Richard Joshua Reynolds opens production, which becomes the logical beginning of Camel cigarettes.
